I begin something when I am compelled to work out what I feel in paint. Using colour and pattern to denote relationship - a conversation ensues...

I thoroughly enjoy mixing colour, working mostly with primaries.
An unlimited amount of relationships in colour can be created.
This goes beyond usual colour theory adding another layer to the conversation. When colour is right to a form or shape in context it adds depth and volume. This reinforces the feel of my work further animating what is suggested through shapes. Patterns are created, a rhythm is set, although not predictable, so as to entertain the eye. The shapes and edges, how they touch or intersect offer further opportunity. It can be complicated or sublimely simple.
Upon greeting someone we may smile, offer a handshake, a hug or a kiss. This denotes relationship. In paint what extends or retreats? Where is it quiet? Why is the colour darkened or in contrast? What sense can be made of how the shapes sit, connect or touch? Is there balance or gravity? Sometimes the work is less figurative refering to a mood, atmosphere or puzzle. It becomes a place to go or an object to puzzle on. Patterns break, layer and alter encouraging one to seek, discover or retreat, such is a relationship. What is felt is worth a conversation, perhaps, even a piece of art.
